What should I do after a tooth extraction?
Aftercare instructions after a tooth extraction at Dental 99
First 24 hours
- Bite firmly on gauze for 30-60 minutes after the extraction
- Avoid vigorous rinsing, spitting, or using straws - this protects the blood clot
- Avoid smoking and alcohol
- Stick to soft foods and avoid the extraction site
- Apply a cold compress to the cheek for short periods to reduce swelling
After 24 hours
- Begin gentle warm salt-water rinses: half a teaspoon of salt in warm water, 3-4 times daily
- Continue soft foods for a few days
- Take pain relief as directed
Contact Dental 99 if
- Bleeding continues beyond the first few hours
- Pain increases significantly after 2-3 days (possible dry socket - where the blood clot is lost)
- You notice a bad taste or the socket looks empty
- You develop swelling, fever, or feel unwell
Important: Dry socket occurs when the blood clot is dislodged. It causes increasing pain a few days after extraction. Contact Dental 99 if you suspect this.
