What should I do after a filling?

Quick answer: Wait until the numbness wears off before eating, and expect some sensitivity for a few days.

  • Avoid eating until the anaesthetic has worn off, so you do not bite your cheek or tongue
  • Mild sensitivity to hot and cold for a few days is normal
  • Slight tenderness when biting is normal and usually settles

When to get in touch

If the sensitivity gets worse rather than better, if the filling feels high when you bite, or if pain persists beyond a week or so, book a Toothache Management appointment.

Note: A filling that feels high can usually be adjusted quickly. Do not put up with it.
