Can I use my superannuation to pay for treatment?

Quick answer: Possibly, through compassionate release of superannuation. It applies to significant treatment and is decided by the ATO.

Compassionate release lets you access some of your superannuation early to pay for necessary dental treatment when you cannot afford it otherwise. It is most commonly used for implants, All-on-4 and other major work.

How it works

• Have your consultation and get an itemised treatment plan
• A Treatment Coordinator helps you prepare the supporting documentation
• You apply to the ATO, who decide whether to approve the release
• If approved, your super fund releases the funds to pay for treatment

Worth knowing before you start

The decision is the ATO’s, not ours and not your super fund’s. It takes time, so it is not an option for urgent treatment. And money taken out of super now is money that is not there later, which is worth weighing up properly.
